Ex-Serviceman Donald Taylor selling poppies in the village

Donald Taylor writes:

Last May I stood in a field in Langemarck, just north of Ypres. Preserved there are many canisters which had contained the chlorine gas used in the first gas attack in April 1915. The realisation that my father had been in the same field 100 years and 11 days earlier made my hair stand on end! Later that day there was a huge crowd some 40 minutes before the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres. Amazingly this happens every day and on special anniversaries the crowd is even bigger. Following the Last Post, sounded by the Ypres Fire Brigade buglers, the silence was intense before being relieved by the bright tones of Reveille.

When collecting house to house I found that some of you already had poppies – from work or supermarket etc. However, you all seemed pleased to see me and were unstintingly generous. Many of you donated several times – at the shop and at the memorial service. I am sure the Vicar’s inspiring sermon played a part here.

God bless you all for your generous response to this vital cause – you donated a shattering £924.20 – absolutely wonderful!

Donald Taylor

a08.08.14.01w1

The Sulgrave Aunt Sally team gathered together at The Star during October to celebrate a reasonably good season with a traditional supper partly sponsored by those players who pay a penalty of £1 for a “Blob” (failing to score any dolls in a round). The team did quite well during the season which will ensure they remain in Division 3 of the Banbury and District League.

Pictures of the event and more information on the next page.

Report and photographs by Graham Roberts:

Another good turnout from Sulgrave gardeners this year ensured the Church Hall was bursting with fruit, vegetables and flowers on the Autumn Bank Holiday week-end.
With 29 villagers entering there were 150 items in 37 classes to be considered by the judge, who expressed delight with the variety and standards attained.
The youngsters contributed with their entries of a Miniature Gardens on a Tray, Biscuits and Decorated Fairy Cakes.
A damp and rainy day did little to affect the enjoyable day, with tea and cakes served in the church hall after the judging was completed and the awards made. All proceeds after costs incurred from the event went to the Church Hall funds.
Photographs on the next page show the high standards achieved.

Report and photographs by Graham Roberts

Organisers of the Midland region of the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain included a stop at Sulgrave Manor in the planning of their Annual Rally and on Saturday 29th August , 26 Veteran cars with their drivers, passengers and guests arrived between 11.00 AM and 12.00 Noon and were welcomed onto the events field adjacent to Madams Close.
The visitors were neatly assembled in a row allowing visitors to the Manor an opportunity to admire the road vehicles whilst the drivers and their guests had a welcome lunch in the Manor followed by a brief tour of the manor House before departing just after 2.30 PM
Veteran cars are those that were built before or during December 1919. A number of the vehicles present, which were built before December 1904, had participated in the famous London to Brighton veteran car rally.
A number of photographs were taken during the visit some of which are shown on the next page.
