Village Advent Celebrations 2018. December 6th. Queen’s House, School Street.

Another fine evening after rain. Yet more mulled wine and mince pies. Enthusiasm is undiminished. Six down and eighteen to go!

The photographs were taken by Leicester photographer S.W.A. Newton, who made a photographic record of the building of the Great Central Railway in the late 1890s. He frequently visited nearby villages and persuaded the local people to pose at strategic points, such as the shopkeeper outside the shop and the school teacher outside the school. Queen’s House is very little changed in outward appearance since that time. The village shop on one side and the school on the other have closed and the iron railings were removed for use in the manufacture of wartime munitions.

Newton’s photograph of the School (which had only opened 10 years earlier) and the School Master’s house, also shows Queen’s House. The photograph is very detailed and it is interesting to enlarge the section showing the children, obviously in their “Sunday best” for the occasion!

The shop was one of two, the other was our house in Church Street. We understand that it was bought by the shop next to Queen’s House the.reby creating a monopoly!
    Great pics Colin
