Party goers are invited to add their own Christmas wishes in a secret ballot!
More pictures and an explanation on the next page.
Note that one of the parcels is unaddressed……
…..and the following question written on slips of paper is distributed to all……
….after some thought over the mulled wine and refreshments…..
….answers were popped into a “ballot box”.
The full moon continued to shine brightly over Manor Road during deliberations in the Star Inn as to the best answers to the question…..
…..and the appropriate labels showing the result were added to the window later.
Almost 90 years ago, in 1928, a delivery van parked in Manor Road (then known as Great Street) opposite to Swallow Cottage (then known as Spring Gardens)……
The young men with the van clearly had an ulterior motive (and a fairly decent camera)…..
One of the young women seemed to excite a good deal of attention….
….her name was Minnie Branson. She was 16 years old and lived in Spring Gardens with her eleven brothers and sisters. Seven years later, in 1935, she married Sidney Wootton…..
She was my mother. This photograph was taken on their wedding day. I discovered the photos of the young men with the van as unprinted negatives among her possessions after she died. I suspect that my father never saw them!
