Sulgrave Village from the East

Sulgrave is a small village surrounded by the rolling farmland of South Northamptonshire, England, near the town of Banbury. It has a population of around 380 people of all age groups covering a broad spectrum of occupations. Village features include the remains of a Norman Castle, a medieval church, the Tudor Manor House (once the home of ancestors of George Washington, first president of the United States of America), an 18th century School House (now the community shop) and a traditional pub.

On this website you can view information about different groups, facilities, services and businesses within the village. You can also see village news, upcoming events and many other items of interest to residents, former residents and visitors.

The website is edited and maintained as an independent publication by Colin Wootton, a long time resident of the village, who makes every effort to verify content but cannot be held responsible for errors and omissions.

The costs of servicing the website are met by Colin Wootton with small annual contributions by Sulgrave Parish Council.

Whilst the website is not published by Sulgrave Parish Council, two pages are devoted to the activities of that important statutory body. These are headed: Sulgrave Parish Council and Latest Parish Council News.

From September 2020 onwards, every effort will be made to ensure that new material published on those pages will be accessible to disabled users as required by the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

As required by the Regulations, here is the Accessibility Statement in respect of the future contents of those pages.

    Hello
I stumbled onto your website quite by accident, and was fascinated. Every town should have such a site to preserve the past and share the present. Your photo galleries are just wonderful! If I should ever find myself in England, I’d love to wander through your lovely town!

  2. Having left the village at the age of 9 in 1952 and having attended Sulgrave school, being taught by Mrs walton and then Miss Victoria Cave it is wonderful to keep in touch with the village where I have always felt my roots really were.
I guess that probably few people if any will remember me and my brother Les, we lived at 12 Spinners Cottages, our surname is doyle but our mother was Joan Salisbury, we lived next door at that time to the Bransons and on the other side the Wottons.
My wife and I have recently visited the Star Inn for a meal, my Uncle Jack and Auntie Muriel ran it for many years, most of my family of that generation have now passed away but it very nice to keep in touch with the old place.

  3. Hi David,

Nice to hear from you. There are a number of us “village elders” left who were around during those times. However, not everyone has access to the internet so I will pass on your memories the next time I meet up with them.

    Best wishes.

What a great website, the old photos are really lovely to see, well done. I am just finding out about my ancestors some of whom were Sulgrave residents, it would be great to hear from anyone who knows anything about the Cleaver (1900ish) or the Dancer family. I do have a little more information and some photos if anybody is interested.
If would be great to hear from anyone,
    With thanks Nadine Leah

Hi All, sorry haven’t been in touch for ages; how sad to hear of the recent passing of Dennis Gascoigne, he and his family were my neighbours when I lived at St Hilary in Helmdon Road from 1975-82, Hi to Andrew Bywater, you lived across the road from me, I think you rode a Fizzy (Yamaha FS1E) remember I had a bike shop in Banbury…..long time ago now! 🙂

  11. Elizabeth Roullier-Bunz says:

I lived at Stone Court next door to Gascoignes farm from age 6 to 10. Went to Sulgrave school – Mrs Carter & Victoria Stirrat were the teachers then. My best friends were Linda Wills, Maxine Somerton, Phillip and Anne Killick. I also remember Trevor Cleaver, Christopher Henn, Holly Bradshaw and Tony Parker who lived across the road. My family emigrated to California in 1966 and we are all still here. I am a dentist married to a former NFL (SF 49er) football player – two daughters. We all visited Sulgrave in 2000. Sally Gascoigne is coming to stay with us next month – very excited to see her again after all these years. Joan was like a second mother to me. Loved going over there at milking time and helping to wash the cows udders 🙂 My email is [email protected]. Would love to hear from any fellow Sulgravians…

  12. Nigel Dawe says:

Does anyone in the village remember when the concrete road was put in at Rectory Farm ? According to Google Earth (1945) aerial pictures it was there then, is it pre war ? Also, does anyone have any further information on the prisoner of war camp just out of Sulgrave on the Helmdon road ? A period phot would be great !

I’m intrigued by Colin Wootton’s webpage with the story and pictures of JW (Bill) Wootton. To encounter another line of Woottons with names like Joseph and William/Bill who are also builders is intriguing (my Woottons–all bricklayers and builders–are from Leicestershire/Nottinghamshire). I’d be very pleased to have some correspondence with Colin to see if there is any distant connection between our two families.

  15. Don Hunter says:

Going through my old files I came across a copy of “Home Notes” dated 24th December 1948 containing a photograph taken (October 1946) from the porch at Cherry’s farm. The children were Rita Cherry, Rita Watts, Mavis Polentine, Eileen Wootton, Janet Cleaver, Peter Hirons and myself. Oh happy days!

    Don Hunter

  16. Are you the Donald Hunter I was at Sulgrave School with from 1943 to 1945? I still live in the village and edit this website. I would love to hear from you. I would also love to see a copy of the photo taken from the porch at Cherry’s farm. Rita Cherry’s brother still lives at Dial House Farm and some of those you mention are still with us.

    Best wishes,

    Colin Wootton (email: [email protected])

  17. I have read that you have some cricket bat willow trees (Salix alba caruelea) in your parish. You can find out more about us here – http://www.brookeswillow.co.uk. We would be keen to find out more about any such trees and be keen to purchase some.

    Thanks

  18. Andrew Bywater says:

Does anyone have a picture of Margaret Joan Bywater please?

  19. David Dale says:

My parents lost their home in the Bicester area after the war, due to a thatch fire, the family ended up at the old POW camp, which I’m trying to find out more about. I’ve been told by a resident it was on the Stuchbury road, but reading some of the posts here, it now seems to be the Helmdon road? Any helpful comments please.
