On a raw, cold and misty Sunday morning, friends and neighbours of Chris and Melanie Kirkpatrick attended a “topping out” ceremony to celebrate the completion of their own construction of a new dry stone wall between The Chestnuts and Madam’s Close.

Chris and Melanie moved into The Chestnuts in March 2013 and had a lot of work done on the extension from August 2013 into the spring of 2014. At that time, the boundary wall between The Chestnuts and Madam’s Close looked like this:

They took the very bold step of deciding to rebuild the wall themselves in traditional style and to this end they embarked on a Cotswolds Rural Crafts course on Dry-Stone-Walling at Broadway Tower in May 2014. They started work on their wall in August 2014 and all but completed it by Christmas. They very kindly invited friends and neighbours to see them place the final coping stones, with hot mulled wine and refreshments to keep away the cold.
